Firewalls. Why you (quite literally) can't live without one.

I would hope and pray, that you are using a Firewall At the very least the lame duck that came with your operating system or the slightly more intelligent one that is guarding your privacy inside your internet router.

Any machine that doesn't have one good secure firewall will fall victim to the worst kind of cyber criminal almost the instant they go online because they save you from the bad stuff you didn't ask for.

These pond dwellers have a list you see. THE list that is readily available and shows them which ISP's have which IP address ranges allocated to them by the governing body of the Internet. Your IP address allows you to access a network, in this case the Internet, and uniquely identifies your connection to it. Scanning these ranges is the work of moments with modern computing and Internet power and they will find you in seconds if you are naked, which you may as well may be without at least a rudimentary firewall.

Then they will infest your computer and take it over, probably without you knowing, and sell its CPU cycles and computing power to another slimeball who will most likely use it to crack the passwords and encryption of another innocent they deem worthy of their attention.

ZoneAlarm is the definitive firewall. It is pre-configured to let the most common programs access the Internet without user intervention but if anything else tries to get online (using your connection to the net) you are prompted to always, or never, allow it to do so. In my opinion this is the greatest reason to recommend Zone Labs because the first time user will happily go about their business without constantly having to worry about hackers or fiddle with their first line of defense. As added bonuses it stops popups and you can filter out the most common sizes of advertising banner. In conjunction with Spywareblaster's flashkiller technology you can reduce the amount of advertising that is visible to you by over %85 - which is nice.
BUT a word of caution. If you are using XP you probably have their version of a firewall running already and you should disable it as soon as you go offline after downloading ZoneAlarm. The simplest way to do this is to go to control panel / security center and disable it from there. Having two firewalls running at the same time is detrimental and will cause problems - besides the basic one from MS slows down your machine, as do most of the bells and whisles added onto your Operating System.
